Steam Controller Demonstration Video (1 of who knows)

Arron Dominion

Achievement Hunter
Valve has released a demonstration video of the Steam Controller in use with three different games. The first game they chose was Portal 2. The next game chosen was Civilization V. The last one chosen was Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

I personally have a lot more faith in the controller being fun to use after seeing this, but I will leave that up to you:

There will also be other videos to showcase other games being used with the controller, so keep an eye out for those.

Anyone who uses a trackpad know trackpads are crap for gaming, I have no faith in it to work.
Agreed. There's a reason everything tries to copy a mouse.

He talks about the precision capabilities in FPS's, but there's no way you can use it to turn fast enough to be competitive.

I don't think anyone will ever try to convince you that this is good enough for comp, it's just supposed to be "better than an xbox controller for old games and for games that don't support an xbox controller". The fact that you'll be able to sit on the couch and play civV with a controller is a pretty cool idea. I have yet to find a "good" solution for using a keyboard/mouse whilst in my recliner. Just being able to play these games with a trackpad that, from the demo, looks better and easier to control than any trackpad I've seen on a laptop, is a pretty cool feat.

Agreed. It's a novel design, so I'd say try it before you bash it for being a trackpad. It's got the potential to go either way and it looks to me as though once you get used to it, it could give pretty acceptable performance.

The release video that steam made gave me the impression that they thought it was better than mouse and keyboard and would eventually take it's place (which of course won't happen). I'm still a console gamer at heart, and when I'm not playing comp I plug my Xbox controller into the computer to play (L4D2, Portal 2, Half-Life 2, etc), I don't see trackpads as an improvement over joysticks.
