Nintendo Charging 1 Time $0.50 Fee To Let Children Use Wii U

I read about that this morning, definitely strange. But any kid with half a brain lies about their age anyway =P

Sooo why 50 cents instead of 1 cent? Is it not in theory accomplishing the same thing? This seems like a terrible way to do things.

You know they have to start with a low price then slowly it'll raise as time goes on.. ;p
Well maybe not but just seems like a grab for money. I definitely agree with Corrupt, when I was younger than 18 I never used my real age. Also if I was a parent setting up my young child's account I'd lie about their age too just so I wouldn't have to pay .50 cents on something I already paid hundreds of dollars on.

It is extremely pointless. I remember on Xbox 360 there was some big ordeal that if you were under 18 you couldn't get something on the Xbox Dashboard. Don't remember what it was. People were raising hell on the forums because all the kids who lied about their age got to use the feature while kids who told the truth didn't. And it was some stupid feature, not like an adult movie section.

Credit card company probably charges them $.15-.30 per transaction. This is not preventing children from playing single-player games or multiplayer games at home with friends, it's to register them AS children on the nintendo network and pretty much parent/restrict them from doing things they shouldn't. Also... This is freaking $.50.

What would be a COOL feature is for the parent to auto-add an allowance of like, $X/week to an online store account. This would teach kids proper resource management in that they can buy some older nintendo games/snes games for $2 or $3 every week, but if they want the $20 game they need to save up. I like that idea.

Except that children are going to lie about their age. And it may be only $0.50, but nobody else does it.

As a person that expects to have kids in the next couple years, if I saw an account that I didnt setup for them, and they were supposed to be using their account so that I can have some parental settings on it, they'd be getting a stern talking to and/or some game time removal.

Yeah... This is also for COPPA compliance, it's the law in order to allow kids to register for your site... If the kid lies about their age, and their parents aren't keeping track of their card transactions, then Nintendo is no longer liable.

People bitch about little kids playing on Xbox Live, yet when Nintendo does something to prevent that it's a bad thing? lol
