[MOBA] Question for MOBA Players

Geoff

Sir "Let's Play"
So, the ones that I know about that most people tend to even mention are League of Legends, DOTA2, Heroes of Newerth and SMITE.

So, assuming most people play only one of them at a time, is there a reason for playing the one you are playing? I ask this because Force put up a new video that had the info of SMITE going into Open Beta and he mentioned a lot of people asking why he doesn't play LoL or DOTA. I wonder, do people truly hate on them like CoD and Halo type of hatred?

Being one of the few Smite players, I don't HATE LoL or DOTA2. I've tried both in the past, wasn't a fan. HoN I have never touched.

I don't hate any of them per say. Dota games tend to go longer than I can usually commit to, and I get lost in the myriad of heroes and items. LoL I tend to not like the heroes as much, plus the item builds/rune system. Smite I like most because the rounds are usually shorter, and I can wrap my head around the item progression easier, plus the arena/domination modes a fun change of pace.

I really like SMITE. Problem is nobody else really plays it. I do not like to play MOBA / RTS type games without some kind of voice communication. In SMITE it seems like every other game I play there is a leaver. LoL is great because there are ton's of champions. And DOTA 2 is ok. I've only played a few games. The problem I seem to have is at my low level there are sooooo many leavers/afk's. It's like every match I play someone AFK's or rage quits. I do like how the combat system is based. Your spells don't scale off items unlike in SMITE or LoL.

In the end, too many MOBA's, too little time.

i play demigod as well its a moba altho in a different style really but some people try to fit in with the rest and are all like "oh ya i play lol it is so much better then dota bla bla bla" yet they most likely never tried it

as for the reason i play all 4 and demigod is because i love team games then again i just love playing a game with a few people now if we had a more active server for mc id spend most of my time there but thus far most people seem to play tf2 or league so i play league the most :p

LoL: First one I got into, a lot of friends play, overall just fun as long as you ignore the average asshats (which every game has).

DOTA2: I WANT to like this one, but I hate the denial element and still have a nightmare of a time navigating the shop. Also, coming from LoL, the 3 stat system of DOTA just feels off to me.

HoN: Game is not new player friendly and the player base is the worst, super elitist jerks.

SMITE: I am very turned off by the third person aspect of the game, which I understand is the draw for many people, just not for me.

And see, the third person part is what I think draws in people that aren't normally MOBA players.

That, and I'm playing as mythological gods. And of course, SMITE is new so I don't have to try and remember 100+ character names, skills, strengths and weaknesses.

ah but see thats the fun part about league and dota and hon there are so many champions so many different ways to build one so many different play styles that its random having say 20 champions and 20 items means that only a certain amount of builds will work and a certain amount of play styles based on the team composition
but take say league with its 110 champions 150ish items which means to countless play styles

eg with the new champion thresh they recommend him to build ability power(magic) items but it makes him virtually useless even if you change out his ap recommended with your own ap build but you go for say attack damage and life steal with a bit of attack speed and suddenly he is a whole new beast.
sure its hard for people to learn what every new champion does but thats the fun part exploring the ever changing play style as what might work now might not work in 2 weeks(and infact in 2 weeks a few new items will be added) so who knows maybe in a few weeks suddenly he is better of building ability power items again who knows

id rather have 110 champions then say 20 as it makes for a lot more interesting team compositions and matches as say in smite you have what? 20 odd champions atm that means on a team of 5vs5 10 of them will be taken at any given time leaving people that play with friends to pick champions they like the most and work the best with their friends their play style and not often trying something new out as others wont do the same

now in league you tend to see an adc and support on bottom lane with a mage/apc in mid and a wild card champion on top now earlier today i saw a support on top an adc mid and the apc and wild card champion where bottom and they where doing dam good

i honestly doubt that if a support champion was picked in say smite or dota that he or she would do well against a champion that is meant to solo the lane
yet what the support champion did in this game was take what normally would be a champion that you build ability power on and build attack speed and damage on her and you just sat there and laughed as the banana's where being thrown all over the place

so to be honest id rather have 100+ champions then say 20 and rather have way to many items that are diverse then say 20-50 for the simple fact that it can spice things up quite a lot and will make things a lot more fun as who does not want to take a unicorn that throws banana's and normally always gets picked on for being useless and turn her into an unstoppable killing machine by doing something that you normally dont do? :p

Look at it from a new person's POV. You jump into a game of LoL where you are trying to learn whatever champ you chose. But you are also encountering any of the 100+ other champs throughout the day.

With Smite, atm, you only gotta figure out 28 which isn't all that difficult. I do see where you are coming from, but also any god in smite can go with almost any role. I've seen junglers go mid lane and dominate.

Besides, Smite will eventually have a shit ton of gods. I'm glad to be here for the beginning of it and learning a new god every other week or so compared to trying to figure out a shit ton of them right off the bat.

thats what made it so fun for me to play lol so much to explore and never knowing what to expect from any of the champions i had not seen before it was exciting and i enjoyed it and i know a lot of others do to to not know whats around the corner instead of knowing it all within the first 5 matches or something :p

It's a mix really. But with the rage I saw from LoL players a couple years ago simply because I didn't know a damned thing, that can't be much better now with a larger player base and more champs. You won't learn everything in smite in 5 matches, but it won't take nearly as long as LoL.

what you learn quickly in lol is the items and then you learn each champion as you play them or against them :p some people who have 1k wins still dont know that a certain champion eg heimerdinger given a few items can nuke you without you even seeing him just by having a certain item combo on him almost no one does to be honest but thats the fun part about league so many champions so many items that you are never a master of anything but a jack of all trades as it where and its how you should take that game on to be honest to become a joat instead of trying to become the best teemo or darius or something :p and a lot of people rage as they want to blame others and think that if they rage hard enough they become better but they wont :p

That's why LoL has a level system. When you play PVP you play with other people your same level. So they are at the same point as you. They probably only have the 10 or so free champs for that week just like all the other level 1's. Then next week you get new ones to try. By the time you reach level 10 you should have a grasp on the core game mechanics, which is don't get ganked and team fight.

You can always do bot matches. If you play 2 bot matches with a champ you can easily understand how to play them. And if you get in Teamspeak there is always VF4 people playing willing to help.

And on top of that you have ARAM, All Random All Mid. Everyone gets a random champ. There's only 1 lane. It's not srs bsns, only for the lulz. There are many people (even in VF4) who are good at the game but when they get a random champ they don't like it doesn't matter if they have 10 wins or 1,000 wins, it's chaos in ARAM.

I am ALWAYS willing to help someone learn League. I've taught four different people and helped many more improve their mechanics. If anyone ever wants to learn, please get in touch with me and we'll hit it up.
