Building New Gaming PC From Scratch

80?!

What in holy hell? I'll gladly be the minority here. I can't imagine having that many installed.
I think it depends on the type of games you have.

I usually have only 1 or 2 campaign/story driven games installed at a time, but a lot of other casual stuff that I like to play on a whim - tf2, gmod, etc. etc.

And when I"m done with it... I tend to just leave it installed until I need more drive space.

GEOFF NEEDS NO OTHER GAME THAN SMITE!

No seriously, I have over 100 Steam games. I have a 256 GB SSD. Windows takes about 20. And with Payday 2, Dota 2, Borderlands 2, League of Legends, Team Fortress 2, Gmod, L4D2, Tribes, Sanctum, GTA, and a few smaller games (<1GB each) I barely have space left. I would love to be able to keep a majority of my games installed so that if I want to pick them up randomly I can without having to download 2-3 GB.

Learn 2 be a hardcore gamer.

Just checked on steam on my main box. I have 85 out of 285 installed.

Hardcore =/= million games installed.

As of right now, Steam games installed are Fallout: New Vegas, The Witcher: Enhanced Edition.

Other games include Smite and Dragon Age: Origins. I just don't have any games to play by myself anymore =(

Question, will I need an extra fan at all for this?
It depends what your case comes with. Some cases come with a few fans, some only have a rear one by the CPU fan.

What I like to do is have an intake on the front and an exhaust out the back top so you have a source of cool air coming in the bottom front and the exaust fan has to "work" less as the air it exhausts is replaced.

You can get into extended debates of positive vs negative pressure cooling, etc. but generally the difference it makes isn't worth the effort of one over the other. So long as you've got cooler air coming in and an exhaust near the hotter bits (CPU fan, power supply) it should be fine... and if you find you've got higher temperatures than you'd like you can always buy a fan later. :)

That works. =D

I realized today that I also gotta get a wireless card. I won't be moving out for at least a couple weeks after it is built, so wireless is needed.

Well, once I get my new apartment a few weeks after the pc is made, I don't think I'll have too many issues with the room being hot.

Also realized I need an optical drive...

If I've done my math correctly, then my third paycheck (2 weeks from this Friday) will be the final one I need to get all parts.

Quick 2 questions.

1. If I bought "2 packs" of that 8GB ram, would 16gb fit? (clueless here )

2. Windows 7 or 8?

Yes it would fit. Motherboards usually have 4 memory slots. But 16GB is kinda over kill. The only people that I believe would need that much would be video editors who load up multiple video files to edit at once. 8GB would still be great for that.

I personally would recommend Windows 7. Just because it takes a while for people to start writing the good programs for new OS's. I'm sure all the games will work, but there may be a niche program you need/want and it's not compatible with 8 yet.

Alright, first paycheck received. Not too happy with the amount taken out in taxes, which may put a hamper on things in the next couple weeks, but only time will tell.

Just bought the HAF case and the RAM. Why? I want the case so I have some awesome motivation, and the ram just looks cool. =D

Is newegg's price on Windows 7 the best? Kinda annoyed I gotta buy that and a new wireless card, but it's all good.

If you're a student you can usually buy it through your school at a discount, and if you're not but you can get access to a *.edu email account, there are places online that are the 2nd best price, followed 3rd by anyone else.

lol you're never going to see the RAM

Also, buy the Windows 7 upgrade not the Windows 7 full install. The upgrade disc has the full install on it, and if you type in the CD code usually it will just activate the full thing. And if it doesn't then you can edit a registry key and it will work. There is a guide online on how to do this. I did it about 2+ years ago with my computer and it has been running fine.

I'll see it BEFORE it goes into the PC =P

Also, we got

3 different "Upgrade" to choose from.

This compares the 3.

Stay away from Ultimate. It's for businesses.
Either get Home or Pro. Home will do everything you need, and Pro has a couple extra bells and whistles that you may want to use some day like backing up files to a network drive instead of only locally attached drives.

Edit: Well shit, Ultimate is cheaper than Pro right now. So if you do decide you want the extra features may as well get Ultimate over Pro.

I'd rather just get Home since it is the cheapest.

Honestly, with how I am spending next week's paycheck, I may have to wait an additional week for the computer to be finished. But fuck it, it's completely worth it.

Yeah mine is an "upgrade"... You can do a clean install from it, from scratch, and then tweak *1* registry entry to make it the full install.

Okay, so a craaazy question.

If I were to get my hard drive, put it in my current pc, could I "copy" the Windows 7 installed on here to that hard drive?

Yarp. you might need to re-activate your install but it's generally possible unless the new hardware requires some non-generic drivers to even function at a basic level - in which case you should be able to copy the install and then boot from the win7 install CD and do a "repair" install.
