New Win 7 Install - 72 Hours of "Checking for Updates"

Hi all,

I figured I'd come here and ask some of the best computer nerds I know if you had any insight as to why a fresh install of Windows 7 would spend 72+ hours checking for updates (of which I know there are many) and still continue without any indication of completion. I've let it run this long knowing the update list for Win 7 is quite extensive. Any thoughts or advice before I just give up and live without updates? Most of the PC function will be offline anyway, but it would be nice to have updates sorted for occasional online use. It's just my spare T81 ThinkPad, so I'm not too attached to it.

Thanks in advance! Glad to see you're all still here.

Assuming internet connectivity works ok and you haven't blocked windows update in your firewall or router, it's possible the update service has changed since the version you have. Try downloading and installing the latest service pack (google tells me there's an SP2 for windows 7). If that doesn't work, there may be an online update for windows update you can get from the M$ site.

Good to see you again... you should hang out here more :)

I had actually already downloaded an update to Windows Update that increased it's search efficiency, but that obviously didn't help. So I've started the install of the "SP2" - which is basically just a batch update for ease of use. It starts by scanning the system for currently installed updates... I'll come back to that later. Thanks for the help, Vintage.

To be honest I haven't been on my computer much lately - it's not just you!

I'm having the exact same problem, and I'm asking here internally at work. hopefully I'll be able to share a solution

Now that I've failed at being helpful I'll just show myself out.

FYI, I suddenly had a gigabyte worth of updates waiting to install...

So through Vintage's suggestion of the "SP2", I discovered the two roll-up stack updates provided by Microsoft. Unfortunately I was still having issues installing them. Turns out if you stop the network service wuauserv it won't spend hours trying desperately to check for all of the updates that are included in the package. I've finished the first of the two roll-ups. Time to see about #2!

So because you'll appreciate this, update 202 out of 262 of the post SP2 "fruity roll-up" updates runs out of memory and I haven't had the time to go in and manually change it so every time I accidentally restart it I have to wait for hours for it to install 201 updates, fail, and then uninstall the 201 updates it managed to install. Or maybe just the 202nd. Either way I don't care. I just want a damn OS already!
