Weird Pc Issues

Ragnorok

Demon of Obliteration
Ok so pretty much for the past week and a half my computer has been acting strange. Basically for no explainable reason my computer slows way down getting only 4-5 fps i have the task manager up and no program is taking more processing power then it normally does. I know its not a Ram issue, or an overheating issue, I've tried everything I know of to find and solve the issue but can't seem to get anywhere. So anyone have an idea of whats goin on?

Without going through the obvious: virus scan, malware, etc. Check to make sure your video drivers are up to date, or if recently updated, roll back to the last known stable release and wait. Check your HDD or SSD's life using a SMART tool. SSD's can slow down if you pound them, HDD's sometimes bite the dust earlier than they should.
Beyond that, if your virus and malware free, graphics drivers (and other recently installed drivers) are ruled out, and SMART reports OKAY: reformat and reinstall Windows.

I'll check the drivers no clue what the smart tool is but i know this if its not either of those then im just putting up with it reinstalling windows is not an option for me

EDIT: just checked drivers they have not updated recently

May also try cleaning up the registry. Always make a backup copy before you do this. Most good registry cleaners will prompt this.

I usually use CCleaner for this.

Actually that is a really good point, that I overlooked. Check your startup programs. Think " what did I install or update recently that may be chilling in the background hogging resources?" Run MSCONFIG for an easy GUI to see whats running on startup from the registry and user/startup

only thing ive installed recently is the update software for my phone but i already made sure to shut it down unless its still running or something but let me check msconfig

ok changed some stuff no way to see if its fixed atm will check momentarily, it seems to happen more in online games but its strange that it is, the only other thing it could be is internet, in which case there is nothing i can do because its on the ISP's side

The weird part is if it is an internet issue why is it slowing down EVERYTHING on my computer shouldnt it only be slowing down the game/program that is using the internet?

still not fixed, but i was correct in one part it only happens when playing a game online but only certain ones, Tekkit Vaultf4 server, League of Legends, and Everquest 2, it happens the most when im playing those and it only happens when playing those games

Update: the higher the graphics of the game the more often the spikes occur

Lets try some more basic things you've probably done: Run checkdisk, disk cleanup (everything goes!), and then check defrag status (defrag if needed). If you have an SSD do not defrag - the issue of fragmentation is a non issue on flash drives.
How old is the graphics card? Model?

Update: looks like its happening in all steams games, just had it happen in skyrim

Dont need to defrag computer does automatically once a week
also i have 2 vid card both are NVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT

Once a week?! You're killing that hard drive.

Ya I would say it sounds like a HD issue. either that or it's over heating, but you said that wasn't the problem so best guess would be the HD is going.

well after a little more checking stuff out it would seem one of my vid cards is goin, now i just need to figure out which one

i'll change the defrag rate as well

I recommend switching to a single card and running Need For Speed, Hot pursuit 2. :D

For some reason that game and it's GL implementation have a knack for finding card problems. I had weird issues with that game for ALL of my bad cards while no other game had problems. In one case waaaay before it became apparent there was a problem. Replaced the card(s) with one that is finally good (I ended up doing chain RMAs for a bit), issues went away instantly.

well good news is i found the problem bad news is i may have to replace both vid cards which i dont have the money for
