Password Rant

Geoff

Sir "Let's Play"

I agree SO GOD DAMN MUCH. Very few sites/games require the CAPITAL and NUMBER bullshit, that I will eventually forget which game/site it is. Then bam. I'm sitting there trying to log in and I'm thinking "Okay, I know THIS is my password...wtf?" 5 minutes later, when changing said password, site tells me to use at least ONE capital and a number. Then I go "Oh right...it's my regular pass with a capital."

Thanks Toby. ^_^

and this is why you just auto save passwords and make sure you dont go to fishy websites and if you do that you use a different browser where you dont store that stuff on :3

OR....

You make a good password for yourself and stop using "geoff" or "baseball" as your password. It's really not hard to conform to pretty much any security standard with a bare minimum of creativity. For example:

baseball

becomes

B@s3balL1!

Then use THAT password for everything. It's the same word, with some similar symbol substitutions, and the addition of "1!" on the end.

As a web hosting admin for 5 years, I have seen huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuundreds of hacked accounts because of bad passwords, and have typed out the above statement so many times that it is a copypasta ticket reply in our ticket boards.

I use the same like...3 passwords (all of which have numbers on them), except for this site actually. The problem is that some sites do require the capital letter, which I never do. So...yeah.

I am the most secure person in here when it comes to passwords. I use KeePass Password Safe. All my passwords are saved on one file that I have on triple backup completely off my computer or the internet. I use this program to create unique 256-bit Hex Keys for every different place I go. I'm currently at 25 passwords that are in no way similar to each other. Due to this, I don't know any of my passwords but I know they are ultra secure. The password vault requires both the file and the key to use. The only password I need is the one to log in to my password vault.

My brother uses the same thing. =P He keeps telling me to get the damned thing already.

Seriously, KeePass is the best way to go about it. The following is a randomly generated 256-bit Hex based password:

a1ea7ca63c19ddb42acb5b8c7ed4b09fa0a1a14afb1cb5e01b282dbad0b00666

All I do is take said generated password and add one symbol to it at random. Any one symbol from the !@#$%^&*()_+{}[] lineup is all it takes to make the above password nigh impossible to crack. I'm never concerned about any of my passwords. Ever.

then your pc gets stolen and it will be fun to remember or even recover said files due to them having similar password protected security :3

Narp. Like I said, I have the file backed up three times on three separate storage devices that are not on my computer or on the internet. It'd only take me the time it takes to download KeePass to have access to every one of my passwords again since I have them saved in an isolated location.

For your scenario, let's say my computer was stolen. All I would need to get access to anything is to download KeePass. Once I had it, I'd provide the key file and my password to unlock it. It's the only password I know and is 56 characters long, including capital letters, numbers, and symbols. It's just easier and more secure to do things my way.

Oh, hi. You must be me. I am the same as you.

(Also, I like your signature.)
