My parents are FINALLY listening

lonesome killer

Banhammered
The phone provider in my area finally upgraded. My parents are getting rid of home phone service and upgrading to 12mbps internet from 3mbps.

Honestly who uses home phone anymore? With things like Skype, Magic Jack, and cell phones that have unlimited calling on their network I don't get it.

It is mostly a generational thing. Older people who grew up with the land based phones tend to want to keep one. What I do not understand is why would you use a phone company anymore when getting a phone line through your cable company is cheaper (excepting people living in very rural areas of course).

Anytime someone can convince an older parent (parents of my parents age or older) an angel gets its wings. Its a cause for celebration. Side Note: My parents still do not own a computer, and even if they did own one they wouldn't know how to use it.... I am thinking about purchasing a computer for them but am afraid it would sit collecting dust.

Yarp.

I know folks out in a rural area with landline b/c there's no alternative. No cable provider goes that far, the highspeed internet is spotty, so no VOIP, and also if you have a business, archaic people still like to send/receive faxes.

Fax needs to die. You just cannot escape it. Every big company in the damn world still uses it, I swear.
Funnily enough despite computers being everywhere we seem to be using more paper than ever. So much for the age of paperless :/

We are small, but my company did away with regular faxing and have a fax via email system. Also, we are in the process of doing away with printed orders/picking tickets and will (within a year or so) replay on just printed labels/stickers, our iPads and a scanning system to track everything throughout the facility.

That's exactly why. The area I live in has no cable. It has 1 internet provider, Windstream. They're not the fastest as you can see they just upgraded to fast speeds. Everyone has satellite dishes in the yards.

Also, isn't phone through cable digital and not an actual phone line? So if something were to happen the phone line might not work right? I'm not sure on the differences between the two.

Next step: Convince them to do away with DirecTV (~$90/month) and watch everything online.

I am still trying to convince my gf that we should just drop cable tv and only have net. Sure we woudl not get ALL the programming we want, but I do not feel like we watch enough tv for it to matter.

Dude, everything and I mean EVERYTHING that comes on TV is online. Somewhere, somehow. Show your girlfriend the way.

The only problem and thing that holds me back is live sporting events like nfl, nhl, mlb. The only available streams for those if you want to watch them live are illegal or if you are a fan out an out of market team you can sign up for the respective subscription online otherwise they are blacked out. But regular tv programming is almost always online the next day for viewing pleasure :)

Sports wise the only thing that gets watches is baseball by my gf, so if she really wanted it she could pay for the season pass herself.

If its not blacked out she could otherwise it would be a waste of money because the games would be blacked out. If you live anywhere in the local broadcasting region of her favorite team that would be the only way to watch the games as online subscriptions would be blacked out :)

Why would blackout affect the MLBs own online broadcast system, that seems pretty damn defeating and makes me wonder why anyone would pay for it (seeing as most people do want to watch their home team).

Lets say you live in Chicago but are a New York Yankees fan...the only way to watch it unless its nationally broadcasted is to either A: have the MLB package on cable or B: Order it up online through MLB.com.

Its also used for people who just love the sport and want to watch all and any baseball games they can whenever they can. Same with NBA, NHL, NFL, etc. On top of being able to watch the games most pro-sports online subscriptions are highly interactive in terms of stats, and real time information as the games are going on much more in depth than just chilling in front of the TV on cable.

It's blacked out locally because tv stations have paid for the rights to broadcast it so they want people to watch it local tv stations not online.

Fucking worthless service then as far as I am concerned. If you are paying to specifically be able to watching something there should not be restrictions as to what you can watch.

Welcome to the capitalist world, where your rights only matter so long as you have more money than someone else.

ooooooor.... you buy a tv antenna and get your 4 local digital hd stations and watch your sporting events there... Do not forget that there are channels that do not require cable and are free. We had the 4 major networks growing up, and never had cable.
Most cable companies also have a $10 bare basic package as well.... Who needs 800 channels of reality tv anyways?
