[Minecraft] FTB Lag Issues

.silence.

I heard we were having more or the same issues with lag on our FTB server (it's currently down). As far as I understand it, eventually the server decides to use an exorbitant amount of resources thus creating unplayable lag. Also from what I can tell, we don't know what is causing that pull on resources (through no fault of any of our staff.) I get that you are looking for answers, but in the meantime, we deal with server lag or complete lack of a MC server. As a donator, this is frustrating. Really frustrating. And I know you're frustrated too.

A proven fix for this situation is scheduled restarts for the server, via use of a script. I've done some searching and that seems to be a very common practice amongst server operators, to prevent the java process from being a COMPLETE drain on box resources. Does this find what is using all of those resources? No. Does this prevent the server from getting to that point, where the it's trying to use 1200% of the CPU? Yes. Look at it this way: it seems like the lag happens within a few days or a week of a restart (from updates and the like.) If we restart once a day when no one is on, and never get that point again, we have eliminated the problem.

I would much rather wait through a 15-30 second reboot, than deal with large outages and ridiculous lag.

Would something like a reboot every 24 hours kill us? An automated 5am reboot seems like a no-brainer to me, rather than beating our heads against the desk trying to find the issue, and in the meantime deprive our generous supporters of what can be a very enjoyable FTB server. You know, when it's up.

The 1200% usage was seen immediately after a reboot. :/

Today's crash wasn't caused by the lag issue, it was just java deciding to shit itself.

My understanding is that Lava and Reechard are working on trying to get this resolved. Since it seems to start lagging out around the same time every day, we're trying to pinpoint the exact cause.

While the scheduled reboots are something we know we can do, my problem with those is that they don't tell us whether the lag issue has been resolved after changes have been made.

My other concern is that FTB is becoming more popular, and the reboots only fix the symptoms, not the problem. As we get more and more users with machines, this is something that can (and likely will) get worse, and unless we determine the actual cause now, it's quite possible we end up with a server that either needs more frequent reboots during the day (bad) or gets so bad that we can't even launch it to get in (even worse) to the point of needing a complete rebuild (blargh). So it's not so much beating our heads against the desk as it is insuring for the future.

I realize it's fustrating as hell for you guys, but I hope you can understand why I'd much rather find the cause now so we can keep it under control than use the band-aid that is daily reboots.

I understand there is an issue. The more players the more machines and the more lag. Its going to lag with more people just like EVERY other game. More people connected to the server with bad ping will lag it a little as well. All this is still playable lag and expected. The machines are Minecraft. Can't take them away so I think that's something that should just be ignored. As for the lag at a certain time of day, that is false. I am probably the person that is on the server the most and through all times of the day. The unplayable issue started early morning, next time late afternoon and one time at like 3 a.m. when I was the only one on doing nothing but my bee's. When the problem hits it isn't a progressive getting worse situation. The server is fine and then out of no where it becomes unplayable.

Ah, ok. I was going by the reports of problems I received, which all seemed to come in around the same time in the afternoon each day.

Just an update to let you guys know that we think we've determined the exact problem, and have a few solutions we can try. Thanks for your patience.

Further update that I've installed some chunk loaders in strategic locations which will hopefully combat some, if not all of the resource usage creep on the server.
Time will tell; fingers crossed :)

So we've had the "fix" in place since yesterday morning. Has anyone noticed lag issues or other related problems since then?

I have not experienced any lag since the "fix" other than tiny little 1 to 2 sec ones that where most likely due to chunks loading/generating or someone doing something big or just my connection. I have yet to experience the crippling long lasting lag since you placed those loaders. Hopefully I'm not just lucky.

GodModeNinjaPC Strikes again ;)

Glad to hear it, I'm hoping it's resolved as well, and *knock on wood* it seems to be that way given I haven't had to issue reboots since the fix. There's still a quirk that the loader I placed in the end seems to have disappeared, so the lag may come back again at some point. I did replace it yesterday and surrounded it in bedrock, hopefully it stays in place after next reboot.
