Connecting to server stops at "Retrieving server info", where it decides to go back to the menu. The console, cleared before pressing the button, prints this:
This seems to indicate that the game directory in /sourcemods/ needs to be called "tf2classic". I renamed the directory and it worked!
I don't know why the name would make it not work, though. I guess we should have a section for "Common Bug Solutions" for things like this, too, as I would believe many people would have also have encountered this.
