Game Over For Playstation 2

After selling over 156 million units the Sony corporation has announced that it is now discontinuing production and sales to retailers. The move has only been made for Japan, but the United States and European markets will follow soon.

The PlayStation 2 debuted back in the year 2000 and was competeing against other consoles such as Microsofts original XBox, Sega DreamCast , and Nintendos GameCube.

When the Playstation 3 was released back in 2006 the Playstation 2 was not the focus of Sony anymore even though they kept it on the market. Game developers were still creating games for the outdated console up until 2012 when there were no new games scheduled to come out for it.

Console wise, I still own more PS2 games than any other system (PC trumps all of course). I wonder when we will next see a system that is so dominant in the market for such a long time AND that includes game releases that people are still coming back to play again years later.
