Shadowrun Returns

Quick Takeaway: If you like Shadowrun, wiz, you'll get your fix. Otherwise? Meh.

For a tactics game, the tactics are pretty inexact, but I just lean back and enjoy the show.

Shadowrun Returns has the look and feel down. Dystopian(ish) Corporate/Hacker sci-fi future is full of dirt, death, and neon lights, and that's how it should be. The storyline is pretty seriously linear, but that just means that you can safely click through most conversations and get straight to the battles if you want. The dialogue is pretty good though, so my Decker is blowing quite a few Karma points on Charisma just for the heck of it.

Players familiar with the Shadowrun leveling system will feel right at home. The rest of us will wonder why we have so many options for spending points when there's generally just one best answer -> your class skill. Not so bad though, since you always have party members to fill your gaps.

The problems: Implementation is not great. Combat cannot be toggled off and you can't save your game, so it's pretty common to find yourself wondering where you're supposed to go to find that one hidden enemy, but having to explore the level in turn-based mode, which is enough to make you want to quit... or start the level over?

You might find yourself executing a move or attack with the point/click when you meant to select a character, but the double-click option should fix that for you.

What's really going to make or break this is user-generated content because EDITOR! Unfortunately the Steam Workshop interface is drek even by smartphone standards, so good luck finding campaigns amongst all the GM tutorials. (I recommend using the collections tab or uninstalling Steam).

Like I said, if you like Shadowrun, you won't be disappointed, otherwise, Meh. Hey, it's better than the SNES game! Here's my shadowrunner:

I didn't hear a single thing about this game till like a day before it came out. I should check it out. Never heard of the Shadowrunner games so it will be completely new to me.

I didn't hear anything about it til the day after it came out! I recommend a Decker if you're new to Shadowrun, not because the 'Matrix' is so cool, but because Deckers are the real Shadowrunners. I'm not sure how easy it is to mix Decker & Rigger, probably harder than in Pen & Paper due to 2 items equip limit (so you can't carry a gun).

I pre-ordered it, not disappointed in the least! I like getting back to the classic story driven RPG and the cyberpunk art style is wonderful.
The only major issue I have run into so far is the inability to save your game mid chapter, but all in all I would say thats a rather minor annoyance that could be easily fixed by either the developer or an industrious community member.

I thought it was a sequel to the shooter on xbox

That game was based in a tabletop rpg universe, the new game is based on the actual rpg rather than a shooter that just uses the IP and source material.

I'm familiar with Shadow Run. The shooter was fun. Teleporting through walls and resurrecting teammates was fun. Was hoping for that :'(

I haven't actually played the shooter. I like shooters, but I always was drawn to other aspects of the Shadowrun universe too much to feel okay with playing a shooter. I also like single-player and campaign modes a lot in shooters and I was told it didn't have one...which is not true?

So far this is the only solution I've seen, and the save anywhere only works while playing this content, but I guess it can be done!

The only single player it had was a brief tutorial mission. 1 level. that's it. It was strictly multiplayer.

It was amazing though. Elves had more mana than everyone else. Dwarves sucked mana from enemies. The Trolls got armor the more you shot them. You could cast ice spikes to slow down enemies. Teleport through walls. Ghost to run faster and take reduced damage. Summon ghosts to help you fight. A glider to fall from great heights without taking fall damage. It was really fun! Just one of those types of games where it's only popular for the first couple months after release, then nobody plays any more.
