faulty harddrive

So i have had this drive for about a year and a half and it decided to die on me while i was copying over data off of it as i knew it was gonna die any moment.

Anyway when i first got the drive it sometimes had this high pitch tick when ever it would have to suddenly go and read stuff off of a plate(its a 3tb hd) but now when it stopped working it has this double tick that plays off in the same rhythm time after time.

So i was wondering if any of you guys know how i could get it to work again as last check i did on it the plates itself(according to the drive) where fine and that was 5 minutes before it died so i know there is a high chance the info is still perfectly fine but i just dont wanna go do all these so called ways of fixing it until im sure of the one that id do will do it as my dad has suggested the freezer trick of making it be really cold but i know that the chance of it getting unstuck that way is smaller then the chance of screwing up the drive even more.

Unfortunately... the only guaranteed way to get a crack at your data is a data recovery company. All these "tricks" aren't going to work in every situation - it all depends how the drive failed - and in some cases, can cause more damage if you don't know EXACTLY what you're doing.

If you still hear the drive spin up properly... chances are the freezer won't do any good; that tends to work only if there are motor problems with the bearings. Same goes for the drop fix.

Usually the click of death means that something is wrong with the drive and it can't find the track servo information encoded on the platters. so it ends up unmounting and re-mounting the heads until it gives up (that's the click-chunk you hear) This happens either because the read/write head is damaged (head crash), amplifiers have died (still not good, a data recovery service needs to replace the heads in a clean room) or the drive controller is acting up (maybe DIY-able).

It _may_ be possible to swap the controller board on the drive with one from a good drive, but the donor drive MUST be the same model, same firmware revision, and sometimes even the same production run. Even then, it might not work, as in some cases there is info written to the controller microchips during fabrication that contains details of the drive layout.

TL;DR: No tricks for recovery to magically make it work again. If you can't live without it, back it up. If you can live without it or can obtain it again, it's probably better to cut your losses and start fresh.

Its just the drive where i store music and backups on anyway most "important" thing is an old mc save and some old tv shows and i dont know if it spins up or not as these drives are silent as hell well that and i cant hear them over my fans but ya it really does just sound though like it got stuck rather then anything but if dad cant get it to work some time soon itl prob go off to the local data center(yet again 5th drive in 2 years going to them :p)

I've saved 2 hard drives worth of data now by booting into a linux rescue disk, mounting the partition in Read-Only mode, and using "rsync" to get the data off of it. It's a bit in-depth if you're not familiar with Linux, but google should get you on the right path.

hmm guess its time to make a new linux rescue disk then onwards to download one i go :3

Hope it works for ya, but I don't have high hopes based on your description of the problem. ;)

neither do i but to be honest if its completely dead i just trade it in for a new one as i still have 2 years full warranty on it i rather just be able to access it and wipe the data off it if anything without voiding the warranty while doing so plus i gotta wait 2 days before i can send it in so :p
