Had a tinker with it today and figured I'd share some screenshots of the experience for everyone that's interested.

First impressions: Still a bit rough around the edges, as to be expected, but shows a lot of promise, and definitely going to be useful for a dedicated media center game PC.

Current downside is the installer clobbers everything on your PC, and will only boot on UEFI-enabled systems... so at current it won't work on that PC that's a few years old you might have sitting gathering dust. I'd expect that may change soon.

Other than that... it's not too different from big picture mode on your regular PC... just more streamlined for a self-contained box.

That interface should be somewhat familiar to Linux users who are familiar with Ubuntu or Debian (which makes sense with SteamOS being built off of the Debian distro). They definitely have work to do for making it appeal to the general populace, which probably explains why they wanted non-Linux proficient/guru users to hold off on installing it.

Makes sense also for the Steam interface to basically be using Big Picture mode, and works for the end goal of the OS. Are there any apps from Debian or Ubuntu that work on SteamOS yet (such as OpenOffice) or do we need to be patient on that front?

I don't think there's any reason you couldn't add the standard debian repositories and install your favourite software to turn it into a full-featured OS.

It looks like you installed in a VM? Were there any complications with that?

When I tried to install, I didn't have a source drive small enough to support FAT32; exFAT gave me an error.

I didn't have all that many from what I recall; there were a few quirks getting UEFI to boot properly, and my first generated ISO was bad in some way and gave me no end of errors until I regenerated it.

Also... don't expect particularly great graphics performance from a VM, since it has to emulate a graphics card.

As for fat32... what? that supports partition sizes up to 8 TB, theoretically. Are you maybe getting mixed up with the 4GB file size limitation?

And you don't have to partition your entire flash drive, you ca make smaller partitions if necessary - e.g . a 2GB one explicitly for the steamOS installer.
