The Square-Enix problem

As some of you may remember I posted in chatbox about Square-Enix no longer honoring purchases made before Feb 2015, I thought I would update everyone as to what Square-Enix has done, now that we have gone back and forth a bit.

Square Enix dropped their disruption software, that was run by a third party, in order to be a third party seller on Steam instead. Because of this, any purchases made from Square-Enix.com before the change are no longer being honored by Square-Enix. Square-Enix is claiming that the third party distribution has the responsibility to honor the sale rather than the Square-Enix themselves (Square-Enix is the store where the purchase was made). Could you imagine if Valve did the same thing? If they said, we are pulling everything from steam and shutting it down to move to Origin, it doesn't matter what you bought you no longer have access to it. But that is what Square-Enix has done.
 
Good move for square they can't handle making good final fantasy games let along run their own store. But sucks for people that bought games on their store.


Honestly, if i had to go back to buying PC games by boxes i'd never have any games because pre Steam all i ever owned on pc was blizzard games.
 
I feel like there was probably a broken contract or something done incorrectly by the vendor in the background here...

The comparison I'd make is if a bunch of people preordered a Nintendo video game, only their store page redirects to WalMart... then WalMart refused to pay out to Nintendo.

Nintendo then doesn't deliver their product to WalMart. Of course customers are gonna be angry at Nintendo, but they didn't get any of the money to begin with, so the customer would need to take it up with the vendor directly. If I pay for something at a store, and they don't deliver the product, I feel like it's the store to blame, not the manufacturer.

Just playing devil's advocate here, I don't know what happened between Square and their vendor, but I feel like this is a problem between a person and a store, not a person and the manufacturer. The difference here is that the store is apparently refusing refunds? That certainly sounds like a lawsuit to me.

In my filling with the BBB, i sent a copy of my bank statement which showed the money went through Square-Enix, also the purchase page never left Squareenix.com, Its tough to find a physical comparison, it would be more like if you paid $100 to walmart to send a dozen oranges to your house every month for a year, then after 6 months walmart stops sending them because they switched from FedEx to UPS and won't refund your money. Why they switched doesn't matter, Square-Enix still has the legal responsibility to uphold the purchase

Yeah that's way way different. If they were doing their own distribution, but decided later to use a different distributor, that's 1000% on them.
 
The BBB isn't a federal agency and has no real power. It is strictly voluntary to join and respond to consumer complaints.

Your better action would be filing a complaint with your state's attorney general or the Federal Trade Commission. Social media can also be a great venue. A lot of times if I complain on a company's Facebook page I get a response within a few days.
