Steam Family Share Entering Limited Beta

Arron Dominion

Achievement Hunter
Valve is going ahead with a rumored plan for sharing game libraries. Ten authorized user devices will be allowed to share games and play without disrupting the original holder's achievements or statistics. The catch is only one user can be active in the game at a given time.

That's.... actually pretty nifty.

Edit: Was reading the discussions. Apparently only one person will be able to access a game library at any given time. So if your friend is playing your copy of bioshock, and _you_ want to play tf2... they get booted out of bioshock.

...... Isn't that kinda how it already works (minus the achievement part, I guess.)

I'd really like it if I could let my kid play Secrets of the Magic Crystals or whatever while I play TF2....

Yeah.. it wouldn't be much different from if you shared your un/pass for steam right now, except that you as the owner would be able to retain control of the account (i.e. if they sign in it doesn't boot you).

We have to take small steps. If those 10 people could access the same library at the same time then it would probably lower sales. But this step shows that Valve truly cares about gamers and not money, unlike EA or Activision.

Oh, I get why they have that restriction in place, but I expect it will annoy people because it's not entirely what they expected.

now if it was to be that you can share it with people but if its 2 people from a different ip then it does what they have now but if its the same ip that then its allowed to play more then 1 game at a time then it would be a great thing for households until then not so much :/

Since Microsoft backed out of a similar plan with the Xbox One, Valve will be the first one to have a system like this. I imagine the rules and framework will change over time as the waters are tested.
