Far Cry 3 - First Impressions

Geoff

Sir "Let's Play"
After seeing Criken's video on this game, it was a must have for me. Sadly, I can't buy it, so I used gamefly. Game arrived a few days ago and I just started getting into it yesterday.

So first off, the villain. Vaas. I've only met him a few times, but the one reason I want to kill him? He said he'd give me 30 seconds to run. That fucker LIED. I had dogs on my ass instantly. He shall die for that.

Jason, the main character. It's interesting how he goes from "I can't do this, this is insane" when you start the game and your brother is leading you out of the camp. Then once I'm out, I'm capable of murdering pirates left and right and he never says another word about it. Obviously, Jason is a secret serial killer, and I've started his craze for killing. I'm the new Vaas!

Crafting isn't too bad. My only hatred was the wallet. It went from "need 2 feathers" to "need 3 shark skins". SHARKS?! I barely go near the water as it is. Now they want me to dive and hunt some sharks. Same goes for the loot pouch.

The pirates themselves are pretty damn funny. Last night I watched 3 pirates standing on the beach, car full of pirates comes blazing by, runs one over. Then they stop, back up, and run ANOTHER over and drive off.

The wildlife is the BEST. A camp full of pirates and they have a TIGER caged up? Shoot the cage, watch that thing go at it. That, and I've seen the "backup" pirates get destroyed by wild dogs.

The story...I dunno. I'm guessing it isn't spectacular. We are caught by pirates who are going to either kill the ones that could fight back, and then ransom off the others and also sell them somewhere else. The ink is an interesting story though. My current objective is to find this Citra person, so I've decided to instead go around the island and take all the camps I can.

With all that said, this game is damn fun. And a question for anyone who has beaten it. How far am I exactly? Again, objective now is find Citra. I was hoping I wasn't half way done or something, that would be a disappointment.

A friend bought FC3 for me last week and I have only played a few hours so far. Overall it is pretty fun and I am impressed how well it runs on my system (especially since I read a lot of complaints). Lord knows if or when I will really get into the game and beat it, but it is much better than I ever expected.

Two complaints so far...

First, damage from falling about 5 inches. Seriously. I've dropped off of tiny cliffs that wouldn't hurt ME, and my guy dies from 4 full health bars.

Second, my save points don't do jack. I randomly teleport to wherever my game autosaved.

Oh, and third, anytime you turn the game off during a new mission, when you start it up again, you go through any dialogue that you already did. First time it happened, I know I had done a couple hours worth of stuff after the talking crap, so I got scared when they started talking.

I have not noticed any issues with the falling damage.

Yeah, that sucks, saving only saves your status and progress and not where you are at the time. You will always start back at the nearest safe house.

That does continue to bug me.

Watch nerd cubed play. He shows pretty early on how much damage can be done. Hell, he ran and jumped and got hurt from that. =/

Also, since I literally just ran into this issue, the game doesn't even give you time to heal when fighting animals. Just ran into a damn bear and it took me down to no health in one attack. Had it been a leopard or tiger, I'd be dead because you can NOT heal before they attack again. It's beyond annoying.

Final Impression - Game Beaten

The boss fights are boring. Both times (Vaas and Hoyt) you get to the "kill", you go into the stoned like state and it just seems stupid. Especially with Hoyt. He's the REASON for all the evil on the island, I was really hoping we'd strap him to a chair or something, torture him. ANYTHING. What I got was dull. The ending I chose (saving friends) was very meh as well.

Gameplay wise, and music wise (burning the weed and getting that awesome song made my day!), this game is great. The two boss fights sucked ass, and the annoyances I raised above didn't help. Also, every now and then a base you capture has a laptop that you can take (the memory card anyway). I'm missing one or two. That's out of...30+ places. I'm resisting the massive urge to fast travel to every single place to check and get this damned achievement. Hell, I needed ONE kill with the pistol and get some damage done to my armor for two more achievements but the problem was that I had already liberated the island. I was lucky to find possibly the last 3 pirates.

Is this game worth it? Fuck yes. Get this game. Try it out. I'm glad gamefly exists when Blockbuster was shut down. It was a worthwhile game, I am just disappointed with the bosses and ending.
