I.would definitely help test any settings I just don't know what the server config entails
Currently, the NS2 Server software is not fully optimized to make use of multiple cores on your system. At best, it uses 2 threads, of which 1 will handle the main processing.
As such, NS2 Server providers commonly run their servers on overclocked consumer-grade systems as opposed to multi-core server-grade systems. e.g. NS2 Servers which handle 24 players are typically clocked at 4.4GHz on an Intel i7 core.
Vanilla NS2 servers take between 500-700MB of RAM upon starting the Server, as it caches the animations and models. 2GB of RAM per server instance is a good amount to have.
Ouch, might be a bit too demanding, although I am unsure of our setup.
Errrrr..... yeah. We'd have to get another box to host it as we don't have the resources for that on the same box as the TF2 servers (it's an 8 core system with 12GB RAM, we have 12 TF2 servers, teamspeak, and Killing Floor on it to boot). We _could_ maybe eke it out right now, but we'd be in major trouble when we hit the day where all of the servers are full and everything comes to a screeching halt.
Another server would add something on the order of $150 or so to the monthly cost requirements... and we definitely don't have the cash flow for that either at this stage.
I figured as much, although honestly there are way more TF2 servers than really get used on a regular basis taking up resources (at least it seems that way when I look at the server list even in the evenings). I am a little shocked at the NS2 server requiring so much and I have to wonder if it is really a necessity, or an instance of poor optimization.
Edit:I may have to poke around and see if I can find some shared hosting at an affordable price (my regular place to go is WAY too high) and a few friends to kick in on it.
The thing with the TF2 servers is that the ones you're probably referring to (arena, prophunt, SB, payload) currently do get people in them at times and the word is starting to spread. If I kill them off just when they are showing hints of life, it completely wipes the hard work people have put into them and they'll fade from people's minds quite quickly - we'd have to start from scratch at some point in the future when we bring them back.
