What constitutes a "hardcore" gamer?

Been thinking about this lately. are you a hardcore gamer if you simply spend a lot of time playing games? Or maybe only if you get truly invested in your games, character and story wise.

    Any thoughts?

Personally I think "hardcore gamer" applies to those who put serious thought into their characters, along with spending ample time perfecting those characters in game. I wouldn't say time alone is enough of a factor because I spend buttloads of time gaming, but don't think I'm in any way, shape or form "hardcore" :p

Why does it matter? Can't you just be a gamer and that's it?

Anyways, to me a hardcore gamer would be someone who does nothing but game. They do nothing else in life except game. Otherwise there would be no way to experience every single game out there. And doing nothing but gaming is no fun.

Why does a hardcore gamer need to play every game in existence?

And I didn't say it mattered, but you can't deny hardcore gamers exist, which is why I pose the question.

You can't appreciate all game elements and be a true "hardcore" gamer unless you play every genre and to some extent every game. Many people would consider someone who only plays Bejeweled, Barbie's Horseback Riding, and Sims games to not be hardcore, but why not? Who's to say that those games don't qualify? And isn't the purpose of a game to beat it using an established set of rules? If you can beat Halo 4 on Legendary level, surely you can play a game like Barbie's Horseback Riding too. You can beat it to say that you can truly master any game, but yet most "hardcore" gamers would never touch games like those.

I disagree. I for one don't play RTS games. I used to play Starcraft constantly, but I was a micromap player, not good at the game in any way.

The purpose of a game is NOT to beat it using an established set of rules. The purpose of games in general is to be entertainment. That's what they are, a form of entertainment.

As far as hardcore gaming goes, I'd say someone who spends time learning everything they can about a series of games, its universe, and getting very into their character is considered a hardcore gamer.

As for "what games" define you as a hardcore gamer, that's a completely different subject. As you said, most won't give a flying fuck if you played a game called Barbie's Horseback Riding. I'd personally say because it probably has no challenge in it at all. This site is actually a good read as well:

And where the hell is Meat? I'm sure he'd have a novel to write about this subject.

Right there is what I'm talking about. How can a game be for entertainment, but at the same time Barbie Horseback Riding not be considered gamer status as there's no challenge? Challenge has nothing to do with entertainment. And since it's not fair to draw a distinct line as where challenge lies to classify a game eligible for hardcore status, you can't dismiss an 8 year old girl who knows Barbie Horseback Riding inside and out as a hardcore gamer.
